A World of Coins

U.S. Cent Values
U.S. Cents (pennies) are some of the most popular and widely collected coins in America. Part of the appeal of pennies is that most collectors started with them as youngsters. Pennies are also cheaper to collect than any other coin type, especially if you start collecting them from circulation. Do you have pennies lying around the house that you'd like to know the values for?

U.S. Nickel Values
Nickels are one of the most under-rated coin series in U.S. coin collecting. The Jefferson Nickel has been in circulation for so long that most people don't realize that nickels from the 1940's and 1950's still circulate right beside the current date nickels. The Buffalo Nickel series is one of the most beloved coin series in all of U.S. coin collecting, while Liberty Head V-Nickels are often overlooked altogether.

Rogue Buyers. Beware of doing business with transient gold dealers whom are called "rogue" buyers (also known as "hotel" or "pop-up" buyers). They blow into town, run ads promising high prices, and set up shop, say, in a hotel ballroom. After vacuuming up a city's worth of jewelry and coins, they disappear, sometimes leaving their victims un- or underpaid. In one test, a gold chain legitimately appraised at $250 was offered to a variety of hotel buyers. None offered more than $130.

Silver vs. Gold Investing

SILVER INVESTING is often seen as merely an offshoot of the gold market.
If you like gold's trajectory, or so the theory runs, you've got to love silver. The cheaper metal has no life of its own, simply tracking the direction of gold prices.

History says that's true to some extent. Silver has twice outpaced gold many times over, first during the 1970s and then again in this early 21st century bull market.

With silver moving less quickly in 2014 so far, but with faster swings in between, this month also brings a new process for the world's daily benchmark price – replacing the 117-year old London Silver Fixing. Silver is therefore making headlines of its own, and many people investing in gold today wonder whether they should include silver, switch into the cheaper metal, or leave it out of the holdings entirely.
